Late '90s/early-mid 2000s horror

Ok, I realize there are probably a hundred movies with a similar plot to these, and it's been over a decade since I would have seen this so a lot of this info might be straight up incorrect, but here goes:

An older teen boy and his family (parents, maybe younger brother) move into a rural-ish house in a small town, and something's going on in the backyard or woods behind the backyard, a burial site maybe? The dog might be attacked or something, and strange people are seen back there, there's probably a weird neighbor at one point. The boy strikes up a friendship/romance with an older teen girl in the area, and they do some investigating together at the local library or some cliche and find some crazy information and have to rush back to the house to save the family. Maybe a ghost took over the dad at some point and he's about to kill the mom and boy? Maybe I made that part up. Maybe I made all of this up!! Help!

(This was probably not a movie that was in theaters btw, and wouldn't have any huge names involved, at the time at least. Watched on FearNet or some other antiquated streaming format.)

Here are a couple of lists of movies that were available through FearNet:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls062726686/

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?companies=co0210551

Like you said, the plot contains a lot of elements common to many films. It is reminiscent of Pet Sematary, but I know that's not the one because it's so well-known. Maybe one of the listed titles will jog your memory?

reply

Not on there, but I probably saw 90% of those on FearNet in 2008, ha.

reply

Okay. I thought maybe something would stand out.

I hope you find it.

reply

Thanks! Not holding out much hope, haha.

Because of the dog, maybe:

Bad Moon (1996)
Deep in the Darkness (2014)

Bit later than you specified, but it sounds a little like Haunt (2013) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2386278/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

An introvert teen befriends his new neighbor, and together the couple begin to explore the haunted house that his family has just purchased.

When Evan Asher and his family move into the old Morello house, they are largely unaware that it has a history of death and grief. After having difficulties sleeping, Evan goes for a walk where he meets Samantha Richards crying as a result of her drunk, abusive father. They say goodbye but she sneaks into his bed that same night. Soon after their arrival Evan begins to experience paranormal activity and enlists Samantha's help to uncover what is going on.

No go unfortunately, seen all 3 of those. It was definitely pre-2010.

Another to cross off your list:
Darkness (2002/2004), alas no dog :(

reply

Ahh good guess, I remember that one too, Anna Paquin instead of a boy though. The dog isn't entirely necessary either.

reply

UGH...I ACTUALLY SAW THAT TURD IN THEATER.

reply

Ha, I wouldn't have guessed it made it to theaters

MY MOM WAS/IS A HUGE HORROR FAN...I THINK IT ONLY PLAYED AT OUR THEATER FOR A WEEK MAYBE.

Not horror but a ghostie:
Believe (2000)

reply

Ben Gazzara?! Ha, never heard of that one, but I want to check it out now.

I saw this in the last couple of years. It sounds just barely like what you describe. Suggesting it just in case your details are more hazy. This is a girl who moves to town with her mom, and some strange stuff is happening in the woods behind their home.

House at the End of the Street (2012) ?
