They won't bring the boards back

Since barely 1% of their users actually use the boards

reply

Bet you believe that 3.3% of the entire world population uses the site as well

How is it that the vast majority of people seem to distrust their governments, their lawyers, the medical profession, the media - but multinational corporations are always honest and trustworthy?

Even IF that 1% figure is correct, the average board regular is probably much more likely to be a) someone who contributes to the database - which presumably they care about at least a little, and b) someone who buys stuff on Amazon. Especially media. The "250 million" figure that they quote of daily users is just as often people like my brother who once in a while takes a look at the site to see how something's rated if he just watched it - but who NEVER buys from Amazon.

Here's to the fools who dream

And Col Needham clearly wants to kill the site as well. Sure!

Just post on Movie Chat instead.

It makes sense that advertisers didn't like their ads sitting next to so much racism/sexism/juvenile ridiculousness/trolling, and that they were the major influence. But if we all stop going to IMDB for general movie info (like I'm trying to), maybe they will realize the boards brought the traffic and bring them back, with some moderation.

reply

Maybe barely 1% posted, but I bet many more read the boards.

reply

Exactly. I never posted anything, but one of the main reasons to go there was for the boards. Yhea, you can check info about movies or actors but you can do that in wikipedia pretty much.

reply

Or just go to the boards to find an answer to some confusing aspect of the plot. Often there will have been several active threads discussing exactly what you were looking for. Wikipedia wouldn't have that.

reply

No, that's not entirely true: the message boards often revealed more specific filming locations than the credits did. Sometimes people who met famous (or not so famous) actors shared their stories. I found the most fascinating links to other webistes (like recently for the TV series "The Fugitive"). And where will I from now on find out what's being released on DVD???
Without the message boards I would not even know that Criterion released "Purple Noon" aka "Plein soleil" with lots of bonus...I already had the older DVD release (but without any bonus features). And these are just a fewe examples. I could go on and on about stuff that Wiki won't mention.

reply

For most movies I watched someone on the message board would usually address any questions I had, or someone would mention something I had missed. I miss that, and hopefully this site will replace it somewhat.

reply

I doubt that it's only 1 %.

reply

I remember a study in 2013 (I think) said 15 million out of the 65 million registered users used the message boards regularly. That's well over 1%, and no way did that number drop in 3 years.
