You should understand how modern left works, because it's how modern western society works. They control mainstream media and academy, which makes it the officially accepted system of values right now. If you wanna live in a western society, it's their way or no way.
Modern left is mostly based in oppression scores assigned to different groups. If you have a lower oppression score than other people, you 'owe' them because of your oppression sins, and that means you must compensate them, usually with transfer of wealth, welcome refugees policies, or in general putting up with whatever they do.
If you are a non-hispanic white gay male, then your oppression score is quite low. You have a better one than any standard white male, but that's it. It will be equal or (probably) worse than everybody else. In particular, you'll have a lower oppression score than Muslims, which means you owe them because of you oppression sins (derived from your belonging to the group 'western gay white males'), so you must bear and accept how they treat you as a compensation.
You're not allowed to criticize them. That's considered morally evil since you have a lower oppression status. Low oppression status people must be very careful if they choose to criticize a person or group with a higher oppression status. If you do, chances are your social status will suffer and you will be considered a 'despicable person'. That's why people don't criticize them: they don't want to lose their social status and be considered evil.

If that were true they'd be persona non grata everywhere and that's simply not the case. Harris and Dawkins are still welcomed everywhere. Maybe there'd be some campus protesters should they speak at Berkeley, but I'm not even aware of that happening.
I believe there's been another issue that's been sidelining Dawkins, I remember Harris mentioning it in passing recently on one of his podcasts, but I don't recall specifically what it was. But I know it had nothing to do with being cancelled by the left.
