Question for Republicans

Why do you believe a pipeline to transport Canadian tar sands (tar sands are not used to make gasoline) to the Gulf of Mexico to ship to other countries would have made America significantly more energy independent?

The portion of the keystone pipeline that is finished is being used today.

It's a solid deal between Canada and the u.s. this type of oil can be refined.

Its creates many jobs from construction to maintenance.

Right now the current transportation system with trains and trucks is slow, burns more gas and oil and spills are more apparent.

When a pipeline leaks those channels can be closed.

Selling oil for a profit is a good thing.

"Selling oil for a profit is a good thing."

That's all well and good, so long as costs aren't being subsidized by someone else.

And wasteful costs are never a good thing. I don't know shit about the Keystone pipeline, but it seems to me this "stuff" is in Canada, Canada consumes energy. Process and use the stuff in Canada. Yeah, it might be "cheaper" to get nice crude oil from somewhere else.

It's one thing to ship the offal from pig slaughterhouses across a continent to make hot dogs somewhere else, it's another thing to build massive infrastructure to move dirty toxic shit around.

What are they used to make then?

Doesn't it replace the current heavy industry modes of transportation such as rail & trucks?

Thus reducing demand and freeing up capacity.

I'm not a Republican though...
