I'VE GOT IT!!! WE SHOULD HAVE POLLS!

That is what this site is missing, polls! We can even create polls for things to vote on.

reply

A poll is a good way of starting a simple rating system... provided it allows at least 10 options.

You can put up a poll... give options from 1 to 10 and everyone can vote on the film's rating.

reply

Yes, except one should not be able to see the results before they vote. On IMDb, one could.

reply

The problem with that method is people get curious to see the results so they'll cast a meaningless vote just to see them.

ETA: What is useful, is when they make the voters visible so you can see if someone is trolling the poll or not.

reply

Everyone gets one vote and one vote only. There should be a disclaimer that if a vote is cast, it will be your one and only. There should also be a list where you can see all the account names of the members, who have voted.

reply

Then again, the actual movie rating polls would be separate from casual polls. It would be just like the message boards, where people, who make up their own threads, can make up their own polls. The rating polls could possibly be a part of each individual movie's message boards.

reply

There should be a proper imdb like poll... but all I meant was that a poll is a good simple way to do ratings until we get a regular one.

reply

That would be cool. Not sure how complicated it would be to implement, though.

reply

Not complicated at all. I made a poll system for MY site, so I can say with certainty that this kind of feature is elementary, my dear LeiaOfLogorithms.

If Jim wants to stay busy, it would only take an experienced programmer about a day to implement this functionality. Add a database table for poll options, indexed on a certain database entry (such as a regular post, for example), and a little bit of code, and you've got yourself a poll system. Features could include "hide results", "hide results until you vote", "lock poll", etc.

If I can do it, anyone can do it.

reply

Woah, woah, woah... Did you honestly think the last part of my username was Logarithms? Or are you just trying to be funny? 😂

It's Lothlorien, as in the Elven city in Lord of the Rings.

But I know how to use logarithms, so there's that. Log-linear time algorithms, base 2, base 10, base 8, etc.

Anyway, good to hear that polls are easy to implement. Maybe Jim will add them soon, then. We shall see.

Polls are fun. especially when awards season comes around, it's fun to have our own Oscars or Golden Globes.
It is important to have 5+ choices, I think there are usually 5 nominees in those awards shows.

reply

Come on. Why polls? Why not Jews, French, German people? Oh... polls! (Bad joke, I'm sorry)

reply

Beats me. I thought the citizens of Poland were called "Poles" or it could be some kind of European pronunciation/written with some commas and things thrown in "Pola's".

France = French (can it be singular as well as plural?)
Germany = Germans
United States = Americans??? (my how we are special)
Canada = Canadians
China = Chinese (notice it is singular as well as plural)
Russia = Russians
Japan = Japanese (notice it is singular as well as plural)

reply

We are all human,aren't we!?

reply

Humans like to segregate themselves. This is why we have separate countries; races (of all things); ethnic backgrounds (which is the real "race" category); physical traits: [somehow, people think blondes are their own species, everyone thinks Asians have yellow skin ( I do not see it), and a multitude of other physical traits to segregate].

reply

The sight had that during the first few months, but got taken off. I tried my hand at polling on imdb and almost got it through before they closed.

I didn't care for get satisfaction and don't wanna use it. But I think polls are great.

reply

On this site, or IMDb?

Almost got it through what?

Get satisfaction?

reply

Imdb. I almost had my poll published and the site closed down before hand. The polls went to get satisfaction and I let mine go. No point after it was gone.

reply

What was it?

reply

I put "bad joke" for a reason.

reply

Totally.
