Not a bad tune
I feel like it's been on a few movie soundtracks...something to look up

I am digging your random song threads...
Just please! No more Lemontree๐Ÿ˜ซ

reply

Love it. Sounds like Todd Rundgren. Thumbs up.

reply

A bit, but maybe a tad more energetic and upbeat.

But I adore Rundgren too.

reply

it does indeed sound a bit like todd rundgren. i'm also a big rundgren fan, though i really only know his 70s work well.

reply

Great song. One of the few great songs from that musical waste land known as the late 90s.

Although I heard a podcast recently where one guy suggested that the song would be a flop if released today because all the rebellious kids running about the mall in the video are white and privileged.

reply

the 90s weren't that bad

reply

Apparently they were...

'Funnily' enough, I was actually abused, bullied, and mistreated during the 90s, but I was able to escape in the pop culture of the era, pop culture that is now being torn to shreds in retrospect.

Maybe everyone was being abused, bullied, and mistreated during the era.

Oh well, the Millennials will get there's in a decade or so's time. :)

reply

I am sorry to hear about your abuse. Not everyone was abused in the 1990s.

reply

It was only a few rare occasions, and it wasn't prolonged. But thank you for your sympathy. :)

reply

Ha! I had to think of this one when I posted the Suncreen one and couldn't make up my mind whether to start a thread about it as well.๐Ÿ˜

I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this song. It annoyed the heck out of me when it was first released, but very quickly it became extremely nostalgic for me. It really defines the late 90s!

reply

did you buy the album ??

reply

Did you miss the part where I said it annoyed the heck out of me when it was first released???

I don't even know any other song by this guy.

reply

I bought a lot of CDs over the years that I never really liked or listened to.

reply

I've rarely bought albums.

I really hate this song

reply

It's a good upbeat song.

And it wasn't composed by paedophiles (as far as I know).

In this day and age, any song that isn't composed by a paedophile should be given an automatic break. Because otherwise we'll have nothing left.

reply

I was 13 when this song was released and hated it with a passion. It's just so obnoxious, reminds me of all those upbeat white people songs from the same period, like Barenaked ladies and Smash Mouth. I'm just really not into it.

reply

Come on. It's nowhere near as bad as Barenaked Ladies or Smash Mouth (my apologies to anyone here who likes those bands). It's a much different sound.

And is there anything wrong with upbeat white people? Should everyone be miserable and wallowing in guilt over their privilege 24/7?

As a side point, there's so much misery in the world at the moment, can we not be allowed to enjoy anything without someone carping? At least this song isn't associated with paedophilia, like the music of Michael Jackson and R Kelly (or are they okay, seeing as they're not upbeat white people?)

reply

I just personally am not into upbeat music and i never have been it just doesn't appeal to me personally. It's a different sound to those bands but to me they're in the same ballpark. Happy music doesn't make me feel happy it actually has the opposite affect. And that's not because i'm a particularly miserable person, that kind of music is just depressing to me.

reply

I can't listen to angry music. It just brings me down or leaves me cold.

I like ironic and faux-miserable music like The Smiths, but even their tunes were deceptively upbeat (and unfortunately, with Morrissey exposing himself as an Islamophobe and bigot, even their music is not as pleasurable to me as it once was, although at least he's not a child molester, as far as I know).

reply

Don't exaggerate. Morrissey is not afraid of muslims, he's just a fierce critic of Islam, which has a lot to do with the practice of halal slaughter. Not strange coming from a guy who hates everybody that eats meat.

reply

One, racist much?

Two, I don't think you've really listened to the lyrics. While it's a hopeful song, it's not as upbeat as the music of the other bands you've mentioned.

reply

Crappy ass song by the crappy ass one-hit-wonder that nobody cares about.

Now That's What I Call Shit Music indeed.

reply

For years I thought that song was by a Canadian band. Anyway the songs bring back some good memories.

reply

I thought they were Canadian also. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

i think it's terrific - great pure pop. the album had several other really solid tracks as well as i recall - haven't heard it in years though.

gregg alexander (who for all intents & purposes was the band) wrote several songs for john carney's musical 'begin again.' i don't quite like begin again, certainly not as much as carney's sing street, which is one of my favourite films of the century, but alexander's songs are first rate.

lost stars and tell me if you wanna go home in particular were great. the guy knows his way around a melody.
