Myers-Briggs personality test

Did you ever take the Myers-Briggs personality test? Try it. I'm ISFJ.

reply

INTJ, aha, suddenly it all makes sense!

reply

I took it once, I was INTJ

reply

Extroverts vastly outnumber introverts, yet every single response reported here is that of an introvert. Curious.

Extroverts vastly outnumber introverts...
…except on online forums.

Interesting observation kazak. You got a hypothesis on this? I’m thinking as introverts we probably tend to be more introspective than extroverts so taking a personality test would appeal to us more.

reply

Bingo!

And introverts are more likely to be the sad sorts who frequent sites like these. Extroverts would be out partying or having sex right now.

reply

Yo malkovich, I think you may have the wrong idea of what an introvert is. I’m not a sad sort at all, and I absolutely love partying and having sex. Being an introvert just means you look inwardly for answers, that you think deeply about things. I don’t look outside myself for answers and beliefs because I don’t need to. That’s what is so beautiful about it.
However, I suggest you get out there and do some partying and maybe even get laid eh? It’ll be good for your soul.

"Extraversion (E)
I like getting my energy from active involvement in events and having a lot of different activities. I'm excited when I'm around people and I like to energize other people. I like moving into action and making things happen. I generally feel at home in the world. I often understand a problem better when I can talk out loud about it and hear what others have to say.

The following statements generally apply to me:
I am seen as "outgoing" or as a "people person."
I feel comfortable in groups and like working in them.
I have a wide range of friends and know lots of people.
I sometimes jump too quickly into an activity and don't allow enough time to think it over.
Before I start a project, I sometimes forget to stop and get clear on what I want to do and why.

Introversion (I)
I like getting my energy from dealing with the ideas, pictures, memories, and reactions that are inside my head, in my inner world. I often prefer doing things alone or with one or two people I feel comfortable with. I take time to reflect so that I have a clear idea of what I'll be doing when I decide to act. Ideas are almost solid things for me. Sometimes I like the idea of something better than the real thing.

The following statements generally apply to me:
I am seen as "reflective" or "reserved."
I feel comfortable being alone and like things I can do on my own.
I prefer to know just a few people well.
I sometimes spend too much time reflecting and don't move into action quickly enough.
I sometimes forget to check with the outside world to see if my ideas really fit the experience."

reply

And what Malkovich? Can you speak to me in your own words and explain what you’re trying to say?

reply

I'm simply saying that at its, admittedly, most basic level, extroverts are more likely to be found intermingling with others, since they derive their energy from social interactions, than introverts like you and I.

That doesn't mean either of us dislike parties and sex. For what it's worth, I like them too.

Plus, do bear in mind that my earlier comment was, for the most part, tongue-in-cheek.

I understand malkovich. I’ve been an introvert my whole life. Some things I’ve read say that people can become more extroverted, but it’s not true in my case. I’ve just found ways to deal with it. Say I had to walk into a party or bar by myself, I would have anxiety about that. I play it off as being cool and aloof by not making eye contact and being oblivious to the people around me, but inside I’m a nervous wreck! (unless I’m already shitfaced😁). I definitely can enjoy a good party every once in awhile but I mostly enjoy small get togethers with the people I’m comfortable with. Even when I go to my neighborhood watering hole, I spend most of my time at the outside fire pit with less people, rather than inside with all the commotion. It can be tough being shy and socially anxious but I feel like I’ve mastered covering it up pretty well. It took a lot of practice.😉

Not really, it's just something I must've picked up somewhere along the way and has been confirmed by experience. A google search on the subject didn't really turn up much, but here's a link I found which both says it may be correct and it may be incorrect, so who really knows?!

not to be a debbie downer, but i've heard a lot of push-back against the myers-briggs test over the years, most saying that it's quite unreliable, prone to bias, that results aren't replicated when tests are taken again, etc.

i'm not the biggest fan of vox, but i thought this article provide a good summary.

Despite what I said to froggyandtoadie2 earlier, I just realised that I tend to vacillate between INFP and INFJ depending when I take the test (but it is either of these two, and not any of the other 14 types).

reply

I appreciate the article, I found it interesting, but most of it seems like opinionated horseshit.
I don’t know if this test is legit or not, but the article insists it’s flawed because people often don’t get consistent results. Couldn’t this just be because people aren’t answering the questions truthfully? It also says we shouldn’t listen to Jung because he’s outdated and thousands of psychologists agree he’s wrong. It’s possible he’s wrong, but why would we take thousands of psychologist’s word on that? Has psychology advanced at all since then? Why do we consider ourselves so much more knowledgeable now?
The one thing I did agree on was our government wasting money on this test. I used to work for the federal government and we had one of these Myers-Briggs seminars. Although I found it interesting, I don’t see how it helped the agency I worked for. That being said, anyone that has ever worked for the federal government knows how much money is wasted. They have a certain amount of money allotted to them every year, and if it’s not used by the end of the fiscal year they lose it. If the government wasn’t wasting money on this seminar, they’d be wasting it on another.

reply

Yes. I'm an INFJ, apparently one of the rarest types.

reply

I took it several years ago but I don't remember what it said I was. All I remember is that it didn't fit - at least I don't think so.

reply

INTX - my score was split right down the middle between P and J. Three separate tests, each time the same result.

reply

Took it once, years ago. Don't remember what I got, an I-something-something-something. At the time it seemed like it was fairly accurate.
