What was so great about Parasite?

It won best picture! 🥇

reply

Direction was top notch.

reply

Honestly that is such a generic statement. In what way? It has to have more than “good direction” to be good.

reply

They were sorry they robbed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon best picture for generic af Gladiator.

reply

Never saw that, any good? I agree Gladiator was generic, still good though.

reply

Better than Gladiator.

The editing mixed with the score. I really like how it cuts back and forth between the family concocting their plan then cutting to them executing it, then cutting back to the planning, all while there is a brilliant violin score. I also love the sudden shifts of emotion. There will be a dramatic scene, but then it will suddenly turn into a comedy.

Sounds extremely unremarkable. I’m glad Scorsese spent 10+ years making a masterpiece so some quirky indie film could win.

reply

I don't see what Goodfellas has to do with this.

reply

BOOM!

reply

He didn’t spend 10 years making goodfellas

reply

Well you brought up a Scorsese masterpiece so one can only assume you were talking about Goodfellas.

reply

He’s made many masterpieces

reply

Which masterpiece did he make so some "indie film could win"?

reply

The CGI laden one.

reply

The Irishman is considered by many professional critics and industry people to be a masterpiece.

Having said that, I just re read my initial response to your detailed reply to my OP about why you liked Parasite and realized I sounded a bit snarky, my apologies. I’m just a bit miffed that Irishman walked away empty handed. I do want to see Parasite.

Since critic reviews seem to be your barometer here, let's compare:

Parasite:

Rotten Tomatoes 99% (9.37/10 average) from all critics
100% (9.38/10 average) from Top Critics

Metacritic Metascore = 96

The Irishman:

Rotten Tomatoes 96% (8.77/10 average) from all critics
100% (9.07/10 average) from Top Critics

Metacritic Metascore = 94

It seems like the latter fell a little short of the "quirky indie film" when using the very criteria you keep bringing up.

And yet a movie buff like yourself didn't know it existed until a few weeks ago.

reply

Fair enough, Irishman still got screwed though.

reply

You're acting like it was ignored despite receiving 10 Oscar noms. Those noms are high recognition no matter who/what ends up winning.

reply

Yeah but not one win? And those noms were courtesy nods not genuine recognition.

reply

Your books are always pre-cooked.

reply

Maybe skip your 15th viewing of The Irishman and check it out for yourself. Who knows you might enjoy it!

reply

Haha

reply

It bounces confidently between multiple genres, has an ensemble cast that gems perfectly, plays brilliantly to an audience with its twists and turns, is one of the most laugh-out-loud funny films in recent memory and is a genuine original, the best (and certainly most accessible) movie to date by a major filmmaker.

If you have to ask, nobody can explain it to you. It would be an exercise in futility.
