"We've decided to go in a different direction."

Whenever someone is fired or replaced these days, the phrase, "We've decided to go in a different direction" has become the knee-jerk justification.

Isn't this really just another way of saying, "We want to get rid of you and/or not have to pay you anymore without having to justify it"?

Is "going in a different direction" really just a way for employers to save face?

reply

Absolutely. Translation: “we’ve decided to go in a different direction... away from you, loser.”

Sometimes people really go in different directions.

There should be a law against instant termination.
Employers should be required to give a 2-week notice prior to termination and instead say,
"It's time to start winding this thing down."

REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOURE MY BOSS AND I DECIDE TO SHIT ON YOUR DESK AND DICK SLAP YOUR FACE.

I'll spit on your face on National Television, ala Bret Hart. Works for me.

I came across that euphemism the other day while watching some older The Price is Right episodes on YouTube. Rich Fields was the announcer and I wondered what happened to him:

Fields' stint as The Price Is Right announcer ended in July 2010. In a statement on his website, he said Mike Richards, the show's producer at the time, was going in a "new direction", and preferred to make it "more of a 'variety show within a game show'."

I'd still like to know what actually happened, though it's good that they gave him his walking papers because he sucked IMO. The current announcer sucks too, but not as bad. Drew Carey's suckage outshines George Gray's suckage by far.

Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy were the only good announcers on that show (and Don Pardo, if you count the original TPiR from the '50s and '60s).

when someone at my last work got fired, they didn't use that.
