I've never been a fan of this style of narration, but it's becoming commonplace. It's even become a part of so-called mysteries. The filmmaker decides to put a scene from the middle of the story at the beginning and it partially or entirely ruins the suspense. I miss having a clear beginning, middle, and end of a story. Does anyone have suggestions for great, modern stories with traditional timelines?
shareI miss traditional story telling as well. Sometimes they jump all over the place, often times without concern for logic or continuity. It gets confusing and boring.
Shooter is a great film with a linear story line.
I honestly haven't noticed that non-linear timelines are becoming more commonplace, not to the point where it's overwhelming anyway. I actually don't mind it as a storytelling device, sometimes it can enhance the story like in the movie Memento or in the TV series Big Little Lies when you know there is a death because of the flashbacks but the victim isn't revealed until the very last episode. I thought that was quite clever.
As for traditional linear timelines in modern movies, I could suggest:

.. actually I think it's much easier to suggest movies with linear timelines, I would say it's still the most popular format.
