Do Americans not understand the term bushland?

I just watched a story about the missing autistic boy in Australia that was found in bushland. They translated that to “he was found in the wilderness”.

Sounds so funny.

Yeah you could call it the wilderness, or the forrest, or you could just accept that there’s a specific word for Australia’s undeveloped and vegetated land. Don’t be afraid to use new words.

reply

I'm sure most Americans could figure it out.

reply

Absolutely. Plus a google search is at everyone’s fingertips. I learnt the term archipelago watching a documentary on fishing and googled it to make sure it was what I thought it meant (a chain of islands.)

reply

Agreed. We've all heard the Australian term "The Bush", that makes it easy!

We use the catchall term "wilderness" for all wild places, but have more specific terms like "the deep woods" or "above the timberline" or "the scrub" or "that desert will fucking kill you" to describe specific environments.

I used to like to dine at bushland but haven't had the opportunity lately.

reply

American, born and raised here buddy...We know where 'the bush' is here, you'd be unpleasantly surprised at how quickly a fella like you'd disappear into it😁

reply

Translated from what? What language was the original in?

reply

The OP's native language is 'Troll-Shithead' so of course that fuckwad's post made little sense to anyone here

Carry on in good health and best wishes, this poster is a marked target👍

reply

He is an asshole, I agree.

reply

We are not the only ones who think so

reply

Well they took an Australian news story (English) and determined that the word bushland needed to be translated into wilderness.

reply

You should get lost in your own bush

reply

Arizona here. We'll start calling our place Cactusland.

reply

Why not? Language should be as specific as it can be.
