You have Jim Jones and the People's Temple in their Jonestown village: 1000 communist fanatics with crossbows and hunting rifles vs. David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, about a hundred Christian fundamentalists in their Mount Carmel fort, armed with automatic rifles, explosives, and machine guns.
For the sake of the competition, the two Cult headquarters are only 50 miles apart. It's after the apocalypse, so no outside interference from Government agencies.
