i call bs on this. wayne was actually a very polite and differential off screen from the books i have read about him. he would not behave this way toward a woman.

The claim has been investigated by film historian Farren Smith Nehme, who doesn't seem to be particularly biased in favour of Wayne, and she has concluded it to be extremely unlikely.

My understanding is that she wasn't Native Amercian at all. She was an actress hired to play a role and she later "identified" as Native American by adopting the lifestyle.
