Gillian Anderson Joins American Gods
Gillian Anderson is about to become an object of worship — beyond her usual X-Files fandom.
The Emmy-winning actress will re-team with Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller on his upcoming Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel American Gods, the network announced Friday.
Anderson will guest-star in multiple episodes as Media, who’s described as “the mouthpiece for the New Gods, functioning as their public face and sales representative, by taking the form of various iconic celebrities. She lives off the attention and worship that people give to screens — to their laptops, their TVs, to their iPhones in their hands while they watch their TVs. Ever the perky spokesperson, and always in control, she spins stories in whatever direction best suits her.”
American Gods follows recently released convict Shadow Moon (The 100‘s Ricky Whittle) as he accepts a job to become a bodyguard/traveling companion for a mysterious man named Mr. Wednesday (Deadwood‘s Ian McShane). During their long journey throughout the United States, Shadow meets Mad Sweeney (Orange Is the New Black‘s Pablo Schreiber) and learns that a war is brewing between the nation’s traditional gods of mythological roots and an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs
The cast also includes Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) as Shadow’s wife Laura, Yetide Badaki as love goddess Bilquis and Bruce Langley as petulant god Technology Boy.
