David Duchovny's favorite poet

Ok I cannot be the only person that caught the refs to John Ashbery in Californication. I looked it up, the guy is overeducated, I'm a big fan of that. I think one of the luckiest things a person could do is have that much creative control to devote a lot of screen time/refs in popular culture to your favorite poet. Or any poet at all.
That's it.

I concur. Who's your favorite poet?

Now I feel a bit stupid saying so - like a hanger on! - but John Ashbery is definitely my favorite poet.
Cid Corman is up there.
Other than that, The New York School in general.

Edit: I forgot Imagists.. Pound, Eliot. Which in a way.. oh, well, whatever. Of course it is all interconnected.

You?

Walt Whitman is my favorite with Maya Angelou close behind. It's like when people fawn over Thomas Kinkade's art (I do, too, lmao!). It's feel good poetry.

I'm not familiar with John Ashbery, and just reading your post, you know tons more about poetry, and by extension, English Lit than I do :) I do know what I like, though.

Hank Moody and the show in general remind me of the themes in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

I do know what I like, though. The most important thing to know.
Very fun to get into a poetry discussion here :)

Alfred Prufrock. If you want to take this further, you might like to look at Eliot's The Waste Land https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poems/detail/47311Only if you want to spend time on it, though. It's not sit-down-and-knock-off .

I don't know about you, but a good turn of phrase makes me happy.

And there is not a thing wrong with that!
You are kind :) As much as I adore Poe, it's Shel Silverstein's work I remember from childhood most. It's comical stuff or things with a wink that I really dig more than dramatic poetry.

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely read the poem.
