Nice guy and was great in "The Whale", but overall he's been pretty mediocre for most of his career. I don't recall seeing anyone praising his performance in other films before "The Whale" with the exception of "Gods and Monsters." It's really only those two performances in his 30+ year career.
School ties was also decent , but I actually agree. He's a 90s actor, for all practical claims, and I feel his resurgence is more nostalgia based than anything. He was never an acting powerhouse. And given how pointless the Academy Awards are these days, even an Oscar win doesn't carry much weight.
I actually think he's quite a good actor, one with a solid talent and enough range to be damn good in comedies, dramas, and action films.
The problem is that most of his early films were pretty terrible. An actor can be good in a terrible film, but if he keeps making terrible films that flop, that actor's career goes the way Fraser's did in the 00s. So let's hope he listens to advice, now that he's officially made a comeback, and has someone on his team who's better at picking scripts than the young Fraser.
