weight the Hollywood double standard.

If Cher gains an ounce...the scandal sheets would report it, but look at how corpulent, oh hell just plain fat Tom is...he would have to lose at least 50 to 75 to get back to his old weight!

The scandal sheets rarely trash men for weight gains, but if you are a woman in hollywood..you have to be rail thin. Cher is 3 years younger than Tom if she packed on the same amount of weight that Tom did we would never hear the end of it....

The same could be said for Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks, John Travolta, Jonathan Frakes & Al Pacino and on and on and on....

Woman finally partially broke the age barrier, actresses careers for the most part ended at 30 now it is about 40, unless you are Meryl Streep, who can play any role or want to play a blue haired old grandmother of 90!

From a guy's perspective, I agree, but I think that's because people feel that women should not let themselves go.

I disagree about Russell Crowe, because he's gotten a lot of hell over his weight before, especially in Robin Hood. Tom Hanks has had a little bit too.

I like to see my men with 'meat on their bones' (if you will).

When I see a skinny actor, I think they're snorting cocaine.
They might not be on drugs, but alot of them are.

I know some live on the treadmill but how boring is that?

I prefer to see an actor gain normal weight as they get older.
They look healthier!

Tom looks super great, especially in a uniform. wow

I notice it, and comment on it regularly. I'd never gotten around to watching an episode of Blue Bloods until tonight, which is what prompted me to look up Selleck. And one of the things that brought me to his message board, was wondering if anyone had anything to say about his weight.

I think it's exceptionally noticeable and noteworthy in Selleck's case, seeing as how his physique was so prominently displayed during Magnum P.I. I think it's sad that so many men let themselves go this way. Anytime I or someone else comments on it, the response inevitably is; "he looks like a man his age should look". Which I think is pure baloney. The only reason why a man is overweight, is because he consumes too many calories. Age has nothing to do with it, other than men using age as an excuse to overeat.

Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. Metabolism slows down as one ages and the production of enzymes that are critical for proper food digestion diminishes. As a result, one can eat the exact same amount and type of food as decades earlier and gain weight due to these factors. Most normal people will gain some weight as they age and it does not mean they are letting themselves go. I've known older women who work out like crazy and watch their diet constantly and still gain weight with age. Do some research before you judge that someone is letting themselves go.

Tanaro does know what he's talking about. Age, gender, metabolism, genes, bones, hormones, body images in advertising, evil patriarchal society, etc., etc. are excuses people fall back on for their obesity. I'm a 60-year-old man and I cut down on the junk food, increased my aerobic exercise, and lost 50 pounds. I am now quite lean. If you expend more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. Anybody, male or female, can do it; they just have to stop making excuses and decide they really want to.

As far as a double standard is concerned, yep, it exists. Remember how Jonathan Frakes bloated out to Orson Wellesian proportions after the first season of "Star Trek, the Next Generation" (then grew a beard to complete the image)? And Nathan Fillion has grown quite portly on "Castle". None of the women on either of those shows would have dared let themselves go like that.

Baloney. True many people make excuses. But there are people with exceptional circumstances - people who have a low thyroid, people who eat lean, but cannot exercise due to arthritis or fibromyalgia or other debilitating issues, people who eat 1000 calories a day and do not lose weight due to a metabolic disorder.

You keep on telling yourself that it's your metabolism. Rationalizing makes failure easier to take. It's hard to give up stuff you want to eat, and exercise requires effort. It's okay to be fat. Go make some more popcorn and relax on the couch.

Let me ask this? Why do you think that he let himself go? You know most actors gain weightvor lose it for their role. Watch and see...in his next movie/series, his weight will be back to normal or it won't.

And as far as female actors and their weight. Delta Burke (a very sexy woman in her own right), Shelly Winter's, (Ditto), Oprah Winfrey...Winter's acted even after she gained weight. So has Delta Burke and Oprah.

Women actors in both television and movies are carrying more weight and because they don't want to perpetuate anorexia. It is working. Models have more weight on them now over the last 5 years. I think that's a good thing.

Hopefully with more male actors having more weghed on them will help with male anorexics, too!!!

It's about time!!!!

But again, I'm sure it's for the role so back off, you weight phobics.
