Underappreciated as a conflicted character actor

Bruce in his younger days played various leading and supporting characters that could easily be branded as evil or disturbed but he always put a lot of humanity into his roles that went beyond the surface energy of being a menacing antagonist.

The first movie a saw in flight as a kid was Silent Running on a transcontinental 1972 flight.

Bruce Dern was always showing up as the psycho bad guy on The Big Valley.
I remember he would always say when threatening or picking on one of the Barkleys ... I was just funnin' with ya! ;-)
