The Ninth

Is there a greater piece of music in the history of music itself?

No, there is not.

reply

i think the ninth sucks. it's my least favourite beethoven symphony. apart from the third movement (adagio), which is beatiful.

reply

I always loved The Seventh more. London Symphony Orchestra...

reply

It's right up there!

I first heard it as a kid, my parents had an LP. I didn't speak a word of German then and there was no translation on the album. But somehow I had a pretty good idea what they were singing about in tge last movement, just because the music expresses the emotions so well.

reply

The words are from the poet Schiller’s “Ode to Joy.”

The 9th is a great 70 minute symphony, but George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue holds its own.

reply

Oh, I'd put the 9th ahead of "RiB", but I love them both dearly!

And I just remembered something from my school orchestra nerd days: Schiller's original "Ode to Joy" has exactly the same structure and meter as the lyrics to "Oh, Susannah", and you can sing each to the tune of the other. So my school days resounded with the sound of nerdy kids singing "In a cavern in a canyon... " to Beethoven's immortal tune, or yowling in German to the tune of "Oh Susannah". The latter really sounds great, give it a try!

And the "Ode to Joy" or Beethoven's 9th is the European Anthem. 🇪🇺

Ehm..."In a cavern in a canyon..." is NOT from Oh Susanna...

Have you been assigned to the weekend shift again, poor thing?

reply

OMFG you're right! The song is "My Darling Clementine", not "Oh, Susannah"!

Sheeyit, all I can say is that it was 50-odd years ago.

Here's a medley for you.

Just looked for a good version and stumbled over this one.

A fresh comment in another MC thread reminded me to this peaceful peace of music.
In a sense I'm glad we got our german butts bombed out in WWII.
But that's easy for me to say...I wasn't on Earth at that time, not even in the planning stage.

However, to make this bump an elegant one, an excerpt from the lyrics:
"Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum."
(= We enter fire-drunk, Celestial, your Sanctuary.)
And one of the funniest YT-comments ever:
"Unbelievable, they lost WWII and now they're drunk and on fire again."

The official 🇪🇺 European Anthem 🇪🇺 is played without lyrics. 🎵 🎶
Each European country has own lyrics in their own languages.
