Why do he has so much comic book authority cred?

Sure he's done some writing but he has never struck me as more than another giy with an opinion. People seem to put him on a pedastal.

Because back in the 90s he made Mallrats with Affleck, Rooker and Stan Lee. Marvel was dead and finished at the time by bankruptcy. He influenced millions of readers and viewers two decades ago.

Because he was the only one including comic references in his films. No one else did that except to mock them. He did it at a time when every comic book company was going belly up. He added legitimacy to nerd culture. I'd argue that he is part of why we have superhero movies today that aren't like they were in the last century. He was the nerd champion.

Yep he championed nerd culture "before it was cool" as they say. The 90's was not a great time for comic books or for superhero films yet here was Kevin Smith putting Stan Lee in Mallrats, and having characters talk about comicbooks and of course Chasing Amy had the main characters be comicbook creators. Nowadays that would be nothing special, but it was a big thing to do that then.

He is famous.

Essentially, he was years ahead of the comic book movie explosion.

You are sin.

reply

Not really. Kevin was a supporter of the community before it was cool to be a supporter of the community.

A lot of people don't remember what it was like for comic books and superhero movies in the 80's. It was hard being a nerd. It's not like today when it's cool to be a geek and you get 10 superhero movies a year.

Eventually the fad will die and a new theme will be all the rage.

We'll continue to love comics and superheroes until it's our time back in the spotlight again.

Probably because he is one of the few people who talk about them and promote them on a large scale.

Image and perception is everything.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
