The Fountain and Tenchi Muyo in Love 2

I just watched the Fountain for the first time last night. The opening seemed so familiar then it hit me with the tree spaceship and I realized it was very similar to Tenchi Forever. As the movie progressed I kept seeing more and more similarities. By the end I was completely convinced that it was heavily inspired by it, almost a loose adaptation of it. This isn't negative at all, many things inspire others, and Tenchi was heavily inspired by Star Wars but added its own personality. This movie takes the story of Haruna and Yosho and flips it that Haruna isn't the one obsessed with holding on to Yosho for eternity, but Tommy is obsessed with keeping Izzie alive. I absolutely loved this movie and couldn't help geeking out at how close to a live action Tenchi adaptation this was. Aronofsky stated his inspiration from The Matrix, Perfect Blue and Millenium actress and his connection to comic book movies lead me to believe that he's really a geek. I saw Black Swan 2 weeks ago then had to watch this. Amazing. I can't wait for Noah now and I look forward to more stories of his, especially if they are anime influenced. I'm writing an essay comparing Tenchi to The Fountain and will also do shot by shot comparisons of certain scenes. Check out my blog later for the update.

This guy truly brought back my hope for original and creative cinema. Bravo!

I think Darren Aronofsky is heavily inspired by quite a few Japanese anime (a la Perfect Blue and Black Swan).

Actually, it's a rip-off of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix.
