One of the Greats

I've seen a bunch of posts about musical acts recently, and wanted to put in my two cents about one of the greatest musicians. His "solo" work was good, his slide riff on Layla made it an iconic song.

Yes, he most certainly was. One of the things I find so remarkable about Duane Allman is this:

He only played guitar for about 10 years of his life (started playing at 14, died way too young at 24), yet it's amazing to me how creative and prolific he was...and how quickly he mastered the instrument.

My favorite Duane Allman song is the acoustic piece "Little Martha." I believe he and Dickey Betts recorded that not long before he died. Leo Kottke (a great guitarist in his own right) called "Little Martha," "The perfect guitar song" and I agree with him. I don't think Allman truly got to recognize how great of a piece this is...had he lived longer, it would have been interesting to see what else he came up with.

I believe Eric Clapton thought of Duane Allman as a "brother" and really took his death hard. I agree 100% about Allman's slide playing on "Layla"...it's amazing.

He's been dead over 50 years now and is still missed. RIP, Skydog. 😢
