why do you think they would automatically side with him?

Buy a ticket to NYC and a ticket to the Late Late Show and confront him about it. Maybe he'll apologize on air and offer to have the dent buffed out.

You're right about the police siding with him. I work at Primark in Cambridge, London, and I saw him putting a five pack of terry towelling socks inside his combat jacket. I waited till he got outside, like you're supposed to, and confronted him. He just laughed at me and said "Do you know who I am?" He handed the socks back and said he had meant to pay for them but didn't want to get mobbed at the checkout. We called the police, but all they did was laugh and joke with him, get autographs and tickets for his one man show. They said "There's nothing we can do, there's not enough evidence". They even gave him a lift back to his hotel because he told them he'd get mobbed outside. No wonder he was laughing at me as he left with them.

Show is in Los Angeles California....

But these are British police so of course they won't do anything. You should have said he made racial comments.
