Is he a real character on bones or recurring?

Like is he part of the actual cast or did he just do a few episodes? I saw him in "Waiting" and I didn't think much of him except his diatribe in the end... which to his credit was his only spoken part. Anyway I just started watching "Freaks and Geeks" and it is amazing how many people's careers it jump-started. Seth Rogen/ Jason Segal who still work with Apatow, James Franco who might have worked with Judd again before "Pineapple Express" but I was first introduced to him in "Spider-Man"... and plenty of other recognizable faces. Anyway after seeing him in "Freaks and Geeks" I have really started to enjoy his work and was hoping he had a somewhat successful career. If he is on a stable show like Bones then good for him.

I'm not really sure what qualifies someone for a 'real' character. is this opposed to a fake character? an invisible character?

he's a regular supporting character.
he gets screen time pretty much every single episode since he's been cast. some episodes more than others.

if you look at his page here on imdb it should say how many episodes it's been. i would think it would be at least 40 or 50.

better than a lazy ass. :D
you have to get past his page to get to the message board. it says how many episodes he's done. try reading.

No, not really. I made a mistake because I was unsure whether or not that was how many episodes existed or how many he appeared in. There is a huge difference between being unsure and curious and being a dick.
