While he saw his time as the director handling the Spider-Man franchise come to an unexpectedly sudden end following the Sony/Marvel deal that is changing the character’s focus, Marc Webb is throwing himself into other work. He now has two films inching closer to production, with the first, Gifted, scoring Chris Evans to star.

Evans, of course, is no stranger to superheroic tales and has recently been back working as Steve Rogers for Captain America: Civil War. But Gifted, written by Tom Flynn, isn’t actually about people with extraordinary strength or the ability to fly. It’s a much more down to earth drama about Frank Adler, a deliberate underachiever, who is raising his niece Mary, in rural Florida. When he enrols her in school for the first time, she is labelled as gifted. All Frank wants is for Mary to have a normal life, but standing in his way is her mother Evelyn, and the dilemma that he doesn’t have custody of Mary. So being proactive for once, he sues to win that custody.

the description each site reporting is confusing

“The Fox Searchlight film about a man (Evans) who tries to raise the brilliant young daughter of his dead sister but battles with the child’s mother over custody will shoot in the fall.”

so there is a mother?

Plot description aside, I'm glad for the role, he never played a sort of "paternal" role before and also with Mark Webb!! I didn't like TASM2, but he made 500 days of Summer, such a great movie! I'm glad he was able to schedule a film in the fall after doing CW, he will have time now to do other projects until he goes back to Marvel to do the IW movies, but there is time before they start production of those.

The description should be his mother. The script was on the Blacklist for 2014 so I hope between that and Webb it's a good film for him. He should have more than a year off before Infinity Wars start filming and I'm glad to see that he is indeed acting again between Marvel movies he's not directing. He should have time to schedule other projects for 2016 if he wants.

With the work he shows in Snowpiercer and Cap, he could book many other films and with good directors like Webb, but if he want's to direct he can also do it, of course it takes longer because green-lighting a film is the hardest part, but till he gets green-lighted a film to direct, he can do a lot of good acting in films what won't take as long to shoot as Marvel's big production take.

Sounds interesting.

Gotta say this project seems very “been there done that.” Hoping for the best.

Interesting though that review is months old and probably a version before Webb was attached as a director last year and started working over the script. I'm really interested in who will play his mother.
