He actually meant it as a compliment. I guess it's the way we classify people here in America. We are fully aware that there are black Hispanics and white Hispanics but if someone is of Hispanic descent we classify them as Hispanics regardless of what color they are. It's the same with African Americans they are all shades and some are physically white and would be considered so in some countries but here they are still classified as African American we even classify people who aren't from Africa (Jamaican, Haitian etc) as African American and when we say black people we are referring to them. When we say white we are generally speaking of the majority anglo/european descent population. He wasn't being ignorant or racist. In Hollywood there are stereotypical African American and Hispanic roles and all the OP was saying was that it is great that she isn't pigeoned hold into playing these types of roles. Cameron Diaz, Joanna Garcia, Halle Berry have all played roles that were meant for the "white" Hollywood prototype all American blonde hair blue eyes. They just think it's good that more minorities are getting really great roles and aren't playing the sterotypical maid, druggie, prostitute type roles or even get a part at all. The OP didn't mean anything by it really. This always comes up when an American asks if someone is Black, White, Hispanic, Asian etc. Someone usually someone who isn't American gets offended or jumps to the wrong conclusion it's just they way we classify and the words we use to decribe people.
