How did he NOT get nominated for Sideways?

There's probably a million threads that say the same thing but MAN, SERIOUSLY! Sideways was a terrific film. Thomas Hayden Church and Virgina Madsen both gave fantastic performances, don't get my wrong, but Giamatti's performances was easily the stand out in that film! He did such a superb job! IT BOGGLES THE MIND! DAMN THE ACADEMY! Paul Giamatti deserves way more recognition.

I have been wondering the exact same thing.

He should've been nominated for American Splendor too.

I thought he was nominated for AS. If I'm wrong - he should have been!

I didn't see Sideways until after the Oscars that year. But yeah, Giamatti as Miles was so right-on-the-money. He made me cry in that movie, when he drunk-dials his ex, and when he sees her at his friend's wedding.

Agree, this man should have already racked up three nominations by this point, and the one he WILL get for The Owl in the Twilight should have been his fourth.

I have watched 'Sideways' perhaps 25 times. It still amazes me. Watch the expression on his face as he dials Victoria and she first answers. His expression just says it all--and again when he drops off Jack after the trip. His expression turns from happiness to sadness as he see Jack hug Christine, and realizes that he doesn't have anyone like that to return to--just amazing and without a single utterance.

An amazing character actor!

His best scene in Sideways when he's at a wine stating with Jack and finds out his book has been rejected again by a publisher, snaps and pours the dump bucket down his face.

Yeah, I completely agree with you guys. He definitely deserved a nomination, although Philip Seymour Hoffman was great as Truman Capote.

I know i agree. Think it has a lot to do with the fact he doesn't really look like a "movie star" in the sense say jhonny depp or brad pitt does. One of the best performances from an ator in that film though.
