What do the French think of her?

I know she's very famous in France, and I was curious about her reputation there. Is she well loved in France? I read an interview and it seemed like she's been getting a lot of criticism in France lately so I was just curious as to if that was true and why.

I guess she's been doing a lot of promotion and PA recently. Lots of movies, the opening and closing nights at the Cannes Film Festival, an album, concerts, etc... So there might be some overexposure.

I don't find her very intersting on interviews. She giggles, says mundane things and can be quite snubbish. She trashed recently released popular comedies and actors and it sounded as if she had achieved international recognition that put her above the rest. Her album seems to be a a starlet's vagary and it's obvious she can't sing very well.

I wan't impressed by her interviews. She's trying too hard to be cool, funny and witty but it sounds fake and she turns out as a pain. But that's just me.

Ah, that makes sense. In interviews, I noticed French people calling her snobby, but my French isn't good enough for me to have picked up on what caused them to think so. I agree that she comes of as arrogant at times, so I get what you're saying.

I'm French and I just can tell you that here there is a bunch of actresses like her, so generally we don't "think" much about her. But, if you want my opinion (even if certainly not representative): I personally did not like her in Inglorious Basterd, I think she was very bad and "ham-acting" , not ready and mature enough to play the role of a great avenger. BUT I liked her in a more intimist register, "Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas" ("Don't worry, I'm fine"): she was very convincing and made me cry.
As a person I think French people indeed find her a bit snobbish, maybe because of her look and her way of speaking (a bit "upper class") ; Marion Cotillard looks more accessible. As Zhow told you, she sings, too : her album did not sell a lot, I guess it says she's not so popular (and indeed it certainly was more the caprice of a starlet than anything else). I don't know how she is as a person, maybe she get a bit "big headed" at one point, but it could be understandable. (regarding the "over-exposure")
I do think there is also a lot of jealousy and bad mouthing going. Personally I just try to make my opinion and "think" of actresses when I see them acting, that's all. I guess interviews are not the best way to know the real value of a person..(actors certainly are still playing during them)
Pardon my english, who is not so good neither.^^

She is lovely and talented, and generally, french people get very jealous in front of success, so she will suffer bad criticism.
But she is strong enough to triumph over acrimony , I think. Come on Melanie, you are a true young treasure !

I've met her and talked to her briefly yesterday at the Evreux (in Normandy) screening of her first movie as a director ( "les adoptés") and she seemed to me a quite down to earth and nice person.

I'm American, living in French-speaking Belgium (which of course I know is not France), but the French people working here in Belgium do seem to like her.

I like her, too. A lot. I think she and Nathalie Bey are my favorites.

She seems to be all the things you say in interviews I have watched on French TV here, but I also think her acting in Inglourious Basterds was meant to be hammy by design. After all, the whole movie was over-the-top, and a parody of 30's-40's American-style action adventure reels, mixed with spaghetti-Westerns and superhero comics.

BTW, your English is very good. I know how hard it is to get to the level of written language at which you currently operate, and you should be very proud of that. Being technically perfect is not so important to me, and probably not to most people on this board.

But being able to convey a feeling, an attitude or emotion properly, and to say what you mean as clearly and completely as you can, IS important. You did that, and a lot more besides.
