Her Voice

Does her voice sound different to you (Ugly Betty vs Who's the Boss)? Deeper?

Yeah, I noticed that too. I did a post on it but noone replied.
Maybe it's just cos she's gotten older. I've noticed that when people get older, their voices go a bit deeper. I personally like the "Who's the Boss?" voice better than the "ugly Betty" voice, but she's pretty much done that voice in all her later stuff.

I've been watching Light off and on for at least 30 years (I had a severe crush upon her when I was in high school. But I digress:)). And her voice has ALWAYS been rather deep and slightly hoarse.

Many factors enter into the character of one's voice. They include heredity, habitual voice production (some people speak or sing with excessive intrinsic laryngeal tension. That in turn is likely to produce nodes or other irregularities upon the vocal cords, which can lead to hoarseness or outright vocal disfunction), whether one smokes or has reflux, whether one tends to push his/her voice in crowded rooms or large theaters, etc.

And some people simply have higher, lower or more resonant voices than those of most other folks. If I may say so, I am an example:).

My voice, in both speaking and singing, is an unusually resonant baritone. I can't tell you how many times people have asked me if I do radio:).

I've studied voice and singing, which have certainly improved my native instrument. But that core resonance and timbre are gifts from God, a lucky role of the generic dice, or both.

I've no idea whether any of these factors has affected Light's voice --

"I always sensed that Judith Light's voice in Who's The Boss was put on a bit to reflect Angela's optimistic spirit. Her voice probably has gotten deeper with age too, but I think in Who's The Boss she was deliberately pitching it slightly higher than normal as part of her character.'

I totally agree with this. There are certain scenes in that series where you can hear Judith's voice versus Angela's voice. There are two parts that come to mind. In "An Affair to Forget" where Tony and Angela are in the hotel room, he tears the AC unit out of the wall and complains about the bugs and he says "How'd they get in here?" and Angela responds "Probably from the hole someone made in the wall" and her voice is lower like it's Judith's voice, not Angela. Then in Misery, her voice is high when she says "Oh Tony, you know I love you." and when she follows it with, "What do you mean I wasn't reciporcating?" it changes and it's Judith's tone, not Angela's.
