Well, Amy Ryan is a well-known actress in NY, where she played several roles on the theatre, but I think that her performance in "Gone Baby Gone" is a breakthrough performance, since Helene McCready is her first big role in a motion picture.

Some base their claim that a film is as good as it's bad guy or girl. If Amy's character rattled you in GBG, then you would probably like the film. By casting an unknown with terrific acting chops, GBG is considered to be a success.
