Ethnicity?

What is his ethnicity? Sarsgaard is obviously NOT an American last name. Is it Dutch? Is it Swedish?

Personally, it sounds Icelandic to me. Very similar to my Icelandic step-family's surnames.

On that note... What is an "American" last name supposed to sound like?

His name could be Danish maybe. Its not swedish

I think he meant WASP-ish, Anglicized or English background when he said "American".

That's right. American could be anything -- white, Vietnamese, Mexican, Iranian, black, et cetera.

But my guess is Swedish.

Sad almost no question can be asked or even answered on here without some kind of ugliness occurring. Curiosity about the ethnicity of a name or even a person is not really a big deal.

Yes, Peter Sarsgaard is American born in Illinois. I remember thinking he must be Swedish since Stellan Skarsgard (different spelling) is but pretty sure I'd read since Peter has grandparents who are Danish and he's also other European - Irish, English, German...

I think he is not only a great actor but a brave one in his choices of roles. Killing has been great this season.

from the TRIVIA section on imdb

His paternal grandfather was of half Danish and half Norwegian descent. His other ancestry includes German, Austrian, Ulster-Scots (Scots-Irish), English, and Irish. His surname originates in Denmark.
