Have only seen a few of his films ...

... but have to hand it to a man who can play the gentle gardener in A Little Chaos and the frighteningly evil Eric Deeds in The Drop, in which his performance was almost as brilliant as Tom Hardy's.

in my opinion he was better than Hardy in The Drop.

That's your right, but to me what Hardy did with his eyes alone was miraculous. In the very last scene, when he hears the door jingle (telling him that Nadia was coming back), nothing on his face changed except for the glow of joy in his eyes. Likewise, when Deeds was talking about getting Rocco back and forgetting to feed him, and that if he got yappy about it he would hit his head with a rock, Hardy, without a word or change of facial expression, looked up with eyes that said "I am going to kill you". They could have printed it as a subtitle, it was so clear.

I do too. I agree.

Hardy was good in this in my opinion it's one of his best performances

I actually felt Schoenaerts and Gandolfini effortlessly stole the film from Hardy.

reply

As much as I love Matthias, it's almost impossible to steal a performance from Tom Hardy, he's so good!

Maybe you should watch Bullhead, a Flemish film that got an Oscar nomination for foreign movie. It was his performance that attracked the attention of the moviebusiness in America. The director was the same as the one who made The Drop.
Bullhead is a very dark, tough movie but Schoenaerts was briljant in it.
