Rank his films

For me Zahler is the most exciting new director in movies these days. I would rank his first three films like this:

1. Bone Tomahawk - a spectacular genre mash of a film that is thrilling from the first scene and topped off by a career best performance from Kurt Russell. A complete original.

2. Dragged Across Concrete - Very nearly an equal first with the above, this is like a less adolescent brother of a Tarantino film. Blistering dark humour coupled with a slow-burning plot that builds excitement in spite of its pace. Also has another fantastic central performance from an 80s icon with Mel Gibson’s restrained, yet compelling take on a character that mirrors his personal dramas to fantastic effect.

3. Brawl in Cell Block 99 - I see this has garnered the most critical praise, and while it’s no doubt a heart-stopping thrill ride, for me personally it was too violent to be as entertaining as Zahler’s other two films. The extreme and extremely gory violence was physically sickening which put a downer on what is otherwise a top shelf prison film with a revelatory lead performance from the underrated Vince Vaughan.

I’ll certainly be first in line for whatever Zahler cooks up next. The guy is a total maverick 👍

Well, I put 7 on all three on IMDb. He is quite consistent with his movies but something is lacking for them to be great and memorable. And it is not the pacing, which I enjoy because of the good writing. Maybe his next will be really great. What a weirdo. I should read some of his books.

I love all three. I consider Zahler one of the premier directors out right now. I love his slow burn style and graphic violence, all shown with practical effects.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 - 8

I’ve watched this movie twice and i remember absolutely loving it on the first watch. I was shocked by some of the violence and his temper when he loses it. I loved how he didn’t want to join the prison boxing program due to him knowing that hitting people for no reason isn’t a smart decision for him. The second watch wasn’t as good but it still had me very engaged.

Dragged Across Concrete - 8.5

I watched this movie once , I watched it the next night after re-watching Brawl in 99. I really enjoyed the dialogue between the cops and the vicious bank robbers. I ending bothered me with Mel’s decisions but I loved the overall story.

Bone Tomahawk - 7.5

I’ve watched it twice. It’s basically the same reaction to my Brawl in 99 movie experiences. The first watch was brutal and surprising. I couldn’t believe the violence at the end and enjoyed the performance and payoff of the movie. The second watch I was showing my family it and they were experiencing those emotions I had the first watch. It was fun to see it through there eyes.

Asylum Blackout - 4

I wanted to finish my Zahler movie list after I realized he wrote and directed the above movies. I watched Asylum twice but my first watch was years ago and I remember liking it but that’s about all. It never really stuck out in my mind and I didn’t remember it. So when I realized it was a Zahler movie I re-watched it. I didn’t like it near as much as his other movies. The dialogue and pacing and just overall vibe of the movie didn’t carry as well as his others. Which is a shame because it definitely could have been great. The story was creepy enough and left me scared of the situation they found themselves in.

I look forward to watching new stuff from him. I’m a fan !
