Been a fan for years...

and I kind of long for the days when he wasn't so well-known. Tom is such an unbelievably kind, selfless, humble and self-deprecatory person, that all this complete and utter B.S. surrounding him lately is seriously maddening. Anyone who watched his Golden Globes speech and took away anything self-aggrandizing or self-promoting or 'white savior' (what the absolute *beep* is that???) can only be reflecting their own bitterness and hatred. This world has become so obsessed with raging against hatred, bitterness, racism, bigotry, prejudice, homophobia, etc. that they don't even realize their own lives are being utterly consumed with the very attributes they claim to be fighting against. Simply put, Tom doesn't deserve the hate he's receiving and anyone who knows ANYTHING about him would know that. And he apologized for what he said, even though he said nothing wrong, but I'm guessing people will criticize him for that, too. I seriously wish haters would just chill out and hug a puppy or better yet, here's a thought, focus on your own life and try to figure out how you could live a better life and make the world a better place instead of whinging and complaining about how everyone else in the world is the problem and if only this person or that person was different then things would change. Heaven forbid someone who won an award for HIS acting and HIS own work should mention himself in his own god-damn acceptance speech.

Whatever. In the words of the well-respected Professor Farnsworth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaY9k6tuLog

And Tom, if you happen to read this by some strange happenstance, I want you to know that there is no one in the world I wouldn't rather be like than you. Don't Change!

(Also, you were amazing in the Night Manager, as was Hugh and Olivia. Congrats to you all!)

I don't like reading all these negative comments either. We are all human, and we get affected by negative energy whether we like it or not. But on the other hand, I am happy for Tom to become more recognized, and I am glad to see more people become his fans.

Fandom is not constant. Old people leave, new people join. People are not constant. They may like one thing, then a different thing the next day. I appreciate people who could be loyal to an actor, but if people decide to leave the fandom, whatever their reasons are, there is nothing to fault them.

And fans are not all the same. Perhaps some fans care more about his work and don't really pay attention to what he does in real life. Maybe some fans only like his personality and are not as interested in his body of work, but occasionally they do seek out his new films and TV shows, and find them entertaining. We may all like Tom, but we may not like Tom the same way. But isn't it wonderful that Tom can bring different people into a fandom, and in this one fandom, we may learn a lot from each other?

I have learned so much from my fellow Tom fans in the past few years, not just about Tom, but also many other things. I appreciate that they are kind, supportive, generous, loving, not mentioning intelligent, funny, thoughtful... Who knows how many new fans could be just like that, and who knows what new perspectives and knowledge they could bring into the fandom.

I first noticed Tom because I was entertained by his work, then I was delighted by his personality, then I became further impressed by his other qualities. And I fell in love with my fellow fans. Initially I didn't expect my fascination with Tom to last more than 3 months, but here I am, 4 years later. I don't know what will happen in the future. Well, I think it is most likely I will not be able to watch his movies in cinema 12 times each forever, but in my heart I know Tom will always be there, making nice movies, doing good work, being a kind man, and inspiring more people, and there will always be many fans of his doing good things out there. And that is a great feeling.

I have to say I'm heart-broken over all the negative reaction to Tom's speech. As said before me here, and said better, Tom is a good man. How must he feel, receiving his first global award (as it were), and instead of receiving praise for his work (JonathanPine was a really lovely, complex character), he's blasted for pointing out the good works of UNICEF, and Doctors without Borders. He must think we Americans mad... It isn't easy being American any longer, we've gotten lost as a nation, and now take it out on actors, who are only trying to do their best. If I could apologize to Tom, I would.

I'm not just talking about Tom here, if you can read, between the lines if necessary. Trump & general trend towards easy negativity are NOT going away in24 hours. Use the brain God gave you.

Wow, I just realized that I wasn't either in my original post. I didn't think my late-night, Guinness-fueled diatribe would spark a discussion at all, but I was kind of raging against many things last night, now that I think about it. There is so much hatred and negativity against everything and everyone in the world today, it almost makes you want to avoid people altogether. And it kind of culminated for me with people going after Tom who didn't deserve it at all. As many people have already pointed out, if anything it proved he isn't remotely arrogant, because he didn't think he would win and didn't prepare to do so. He even lost $20.00 to that effect. It's weird how someone you have never met and don't know personally can affect and influence your life so much, to the point that you leap to their defense when they are criticized (particularly in an unjust and undeserved fashion). Regardless of personal relationship, they are real people with real feelings and sometimes I think people forget that. Obviously, Tom was aware of and read what people were saying about him. And, of course, being the English gentleman he is, he apologized. Anyways, I'm rambling...

I do find it highly amusing how many responses to this and other recent threads are blocked, courtesy of my 'ignore list' which blossomed during Tom's time with Taylor. Apparently, people are flocking back simply to complain about and insult a man they don't like to fans they find annoying and stupid. Have you really nothing better to do with your life? 😉

Anyways, my uncensored (whoop whoop) Blu-ray of The Night Manager arrived tonight and I intend to rewatch and enjoy, so farewell!

Agreed. Alienhunter, here's a more positive thing, balancing the cynicism:
