Also Korean is a very hard language to learn, about on par with Japanese.

I understand how kids born in the U.S can become Americanized what I don't understand is how is it that she doesn't know Korean and her parents barley know English. How were they able to communicate??? I want to know if I misunderstood something because that does not make any sense to me.

She can probably understand Korean but can barely speak it. her parents learnt to speak and understand english so they can communicate with each other fine. I'm the same with spanish and that is way way easier language than korean.

I kind of have the same relationship with my parents. I'm Chinese and speak very very rudimentary Mandarin. If I were asked in an interview if I could speak Chinese, I would probably just say no. My parents know how to speak and understand some English so I talk to them in a sort of mixture of Chinese and English. It probably sounds very awful to any native Chinese speaker but it works.
