I could actually appreciate them selling out, if they...

... sold earplugs to shield us from their "music".

reply

They never claimed to be musical afficionados or sevants. They're simply what they've always been...a loud, crunchy, fun, Rock & Roll party. Nothing more, nothing else. I'm not sure why people enjoy tearing them down.

reply

I enjoy tearing them down for the same reason they enjoy destroying my ears. Also, they're assholes.

reply

Opinions vary.

Besides....plenty of rock & roll icons are assholes. Who cares? Did you want choir boys??

I've seen them several times, and they've always been a great time.

reply

Gene and Paul are assholes. I won't disagree with that.

reply

I think people enjoy tearing them down because they suck. Badly.

reply

I always had the impression their main audience was twelve to fifteen-year-old boys. The makeup and costumes make them hard to take seriously.

reply

The makeup and costumes just add to me not taking them seriously. Their "music" alone is enough to laugh at.

reply

Eehh, they had a couple of OK tracks. You do have get them some credit. If for nothing else the fact they hung around for 50 years. With lineup changes, in and out of makeup - they managed to keep going.

Personally, one was a fan for a year or two in the late 70s. That was literally it for me. Kiss went up and down after that - I had no interest.

reply

They hung around for 50 years because of their gimmicks. The Stones are better in every way.

reply

Oh yes, of course. I'm not in any way saying KISS is a great band - or even a good band. But I do give them credit for hanging around as long as they did. It certainly didn't have anything to do with the music, that's for sure. In fact, in the 80s with no gimmicks, they were nothing more than a two bit B level hair metal band.

Let's see.....

Makeup - "Detroit Rock City" "Calling Dr. Love" Live version of "Shock Me" "I LOve it Loud"

Sans makeup - Eehh, maybe "Lick it Up" plus - maybe... "UNholy"

That's about all I like from them.

reply

If you ever feel like a laugh, you should check out the comments to Lick it Up on YouTube. It's a bunch of KISS fans making fun of it in every way, especially Gene.

Meanwhile: -

Kiss is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time,[8][9] as well as one of the best selling bands of all time, claiming to have sold more than 75 million records worldwide,[10] including 21 million[11] RIAA-certified albums.[12] Kiss has also earned 30 Gold albums, the most of any band from the United States. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums, three of which earned multi-Platinum.[9] On April 10, 2014, the four original members of Kiss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the ninth "Greatest Metal Band of All Time",[13] and placed tenth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list,[14] as well as being ranked as the third "Best Metal and Hard Rock Live Band of All Time" by Loudwire magazine.[15]

I never said they weren't successful, I just said they were shit. We all know Ed Sheeran's popularity has nothing to do with his music being good.

reply

And Baywatch is the best TV show of all time because of it's popularity.

reply

Shit is one of the most popular substances on earth.
Eat shit. Billions of flies cannot all be mistaken.

reply

I like Kiss. They have catchy, fun rock songs. I like Gene Simmons bass playing on the songs he played on. He has good lines and a crunchy, thick bass tone. To me they seem to be the blueprint to 80's hair metal, which I also like and a lot of people hate.

reply

It's just..."fashionable"....and pretty ignorant to bag on KISS. And pretty unimaginative, frankly. I call it youthful ignorance, by people who don't know the bigger picture of the band, their influence, and what they did for rock & roll. If you want to boil it all down to simply how talented they are as singers or musicians....you're missing the point. Rock & Roll is not about being virtuosos. It's about being different...changing the game...being rebellious and fun, loud, bombastic and creative. When KISS first came on the scene in the 70's, there was nothing like them; they changed the whole scene of rock & roll and would end up influencing countless bands to follow, including: Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Metallica, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, George Clinton, Nirvana, DIO, Megadeath, STP, Rick James, Soundgarden, Anthrax, Nine Inch Nails, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Rush, etc, etc.. The list is endless.

Jason Newsted of Metallica once said...if it weren’t for KISS he wouldn’t have picked up the bass.
Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave/Prophets of Rage) started learning guitar specifically so he could play Love Gun. Chris Chiflett of Foo Fighters has "Ace" on his guitar.
Nikki Sixx said (Kiss) song writing was really a big influence. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater (and others) said Kiss "were the Beatles for our generation." Green Day routinely plays Rock & Roll All Night at their shows. Mike McCready & Slash are huge KISS (Ace Frehley) fans. Dave Grohl says KISS "inspired me to become a rock n' roll musician." "One hundred million fucking albums. Countless hit singles, record-breaking concert attendance. They even made fuckin’ disco look cool with “I Was Made For Lovin You.” --Dave Grohl

Nile Rodgers was deeply influenced by KISS, and once said: Chic is a mashup of Roxy Music and Kiss." Questlove on KISS: "I was obsessed".

It's easy for some music snob or slack-jawed 25 year old who wasn't there in the zeitgeist and has no wider knowledge or experience regarding rock & roll in the bigger picture...to make fun of KISS. To me, it just sounds ignorant--and they lose all credibility. Dave Grohl knows more about music, musicianship and rock than most of us will ever know. What does HE know about KISS that some of you idiots don't?

Alice Cooper had five albums out before Kiss' debut in 1973 and released two more albums that year. So, it's more accurate to say that Alice Cooper influenced Kiss. (Although it's possible that Kiss' mega-success influenced Alice to up the ante).

reply

I find them radio friendly. I wouldn't hate them as much if they weren't so popular and they weren't such assholes.

reply

Whose worse

KISS, Kowalski or Justin Trudeau?

reply

KISS. I can avoid them for the most part. At least some people find joy in them.
Kowalski. I have to put up with "him" every day. No one likes "him" and "he" serves no purpose.
Trudeau. All politicians suck. Some people actually like him.

Verdict: Kowalski.

reply

Geez you really seem to hate KISS.

reply

I just need to spread the word.

reply

I see, while I may disagree with your premise I do commend you for having a goal in life and for having the motivation and passion to actively pursue it.

reply

I appreciate you allowing me to do so without directing any hate toward me.
