Matt as the Doctor

i'm pretty sure every one thought he was going to be horrible as the doctor. But that's only because he was soo young, and he was completely different to David Tenant. And people don't want to let go.

People only wanted actors similar to Tenant, which misses the point of Doctor Who. He didn't try to copy David Tenant's personality as the doctor, He came up with his own unique character, which makes him a very talented actor, because it worked. There's no chance it would've worked with Matt if he tried to follow Tenant as close as possible. The casting people obviously saw something new when they saw Matt Smith. He manages to keep the vital characteristics that most of the doctors have, and at the same time be completely original.

And in fairness, Matt Smith must've been very brave, to have enough confidence to show the audience a new doctor. Because no one wanted a new doctor after Tenant.

Here here!! Well said. I love him as the Doctor. I think he's done a fantastic job :-)

I completely agree. Yes well said indeed! I think it's quite silly when folks say "oh this doctor is better or that doctor is better". I mean, it's ok to have a "favorite" sure - - but to say one is "better" than the other is just plain silly, because as the OP said each one is unique and different in their own way. Also a lot of folks who LOVE Tennant have not seen any of the previous 8 doctors, all VERY different. Some were super stuck up, some where really sarcastic, some more serious. All very different. I loved Tennant too. And Eccleston. I honestly don't have a favorite of the revival doctors. They have all played him WONDERFULLY. I've seen every Doctor Who episode since the beginning and even I will admit, I didn't care for a few doctors. But that's ok. They still did a good job and honestly - I am watching the series from the beginning again - and to have the doctor behave differently and have a different personality makes sense and shows his growth as an insanely complex character.

yeah i agree with that. Personally, I can't decide which one i prefer, Tenant or Smith. Because it's impossible to chose, because they're so different. There is one thing i noticed about Matt Smith though. He's far more iconic then Tenant, with his bow tie, suspenders, haircut and possibly the shape of his head. And the doctor should be more iconic. Tom Baker was, with his scarf, curly hair and hat.

I have not gone all the way back yet. I'm working on it though. I've watched all of the new episodes up to this point. Tennant is my Doctor, but I adore Smith's childish antics and when he gets serious it's awesome to watch. Eccleston seemed too abrasive to me though he had his moments.
