Looks like she will need to really up het game and refresh her music if she wants to remain on top, otherwise she will end up crashing as very much all popular artist eventually do.

Swift isn't really a performing artist, she's a phenomenon. Much like Madonna before her, her body of work simply isn't very good. Once Swift's fans realize the emperor has no clothes, her appeal will diminish. Madonna was very good at reinventing herself, but without any real musical talent, neither Madonna nor Swift will have their body of work to carry them once their physical appeal abates.

I've never understood what made Madonna so successful. She was decent looking in her heyday, but hardly a devastating beauty. She could sing alright, but it's not like she had either the voice of angel, or could put lots of energy and passion into her singing like, say, Janis Joplin. Her music was... meh. Not actively bad but, to me at least, completely unmemorable, with neither brilliant lyrics nor catchy tunes to stick in your head. She tried her hand at acting, and wasn't great at it. And her personality, from everything I've ever heard, is something that I always found downright repellent.

I just don't get how she ever became such a big deal.

Well, Taylor Swift is certainly prettier than Madonna was, and she doesn't seem to have such an unpleasant personality, and but most of my above criticisms of Madonna would still apply. I can't really explain why she's such a phenomenon either.

It goes back to my first description - "phenomenon". There's no rhyme or reason, but with Madonna, her schtick was pushing the boundaries of decency in the entertainment industry.

Today, there's not much that isn't seen or heard even on broadcast TV, and unless she wants to get into something truly bizarre like bestiality, there's not much unexplored material for Madonna to use to stay "relevant".

My girlfriend had some of her new album on in the car, and the lyrics were so bad I was laughing out loud. I don't know how anyone likes this crap.

reply

I had a similar experience, one of her recent songs on in a car I was in, and I was surprised when told it was her as the song was painfully and irredeemably bad in every way.

reply

After you laughed at it, did she threaten to dump you or what?? 🤔

reply

Her music was NEVER good, she is a product of genius marketing.

reply

Indeed but it seems like people arre finally starting to catch up to that.

reply

I would rate her new album a 7.5/10.

reply

The album is quite bloated and samey...31 songs, really? And it is clear that her continued collaboration with Jack Antonoff has grown stale.
