You will soon be able to see it on DVD in two versions -- the orginal Swdish cut with English titles and the 1922 Metro U.S. release known as THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT. Blaine Gale has recorded on the famous Organ Loft Wurlitzer Pipe organ two new scores for each version. It will be released as a limited edition with both versions of the film and the complete Text of the original book's English translation. So you will be able to see the original edit and the way that it was re-edited for the United States release and read the very famous book that it was based upon. This will likely be released through Grapevine Video (Grapevine.com) during the middle of 2008. I'll keep you posted.
P.S.: I've now seen the completed DVD and am very impressed. Each version of the film was recorded live at actually performances and the theatre organ score greatly enhance the film experience. Interestly both versions of the film have strengths and weaknesses. Being able to see what the U.S. release of the film as THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT was like is exciting! Yes, one would not replace the original Swedish edition, but it is fascinating to see how the film could be re-edited and still be powerful. Also, having the English translation of the novel is a great help. By reading the book one can fully appreciate the greatness of the directing and adaptation.
While the picture elements are from 16mm material and will not have the beauty of the recent Pal release in England, this edition is well worth considering purchasing.
