Blu-ray by MoC!

Yay! "Masters of Cinema" is bringing out a Blu-ray of this Murnau film this year in the UK. That would be the first silent film on Blu-ray!

Seems to be finished and available now. Includes both movietone (bad quality) and czech (noticeably better quality) versions.

I'm not sure if the cuts are the same though, and I don't know whether you can use the movietone soundtrack when watching the czech version.

Hopefully a review of the blu-ray appears soon.

Blu-ray.com has a review up. And it is very positive indeed: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sunrise-Blu-ray-Review/6696/

This partucular movie is a waste of money on BD, yes. It's negatives are too damaged.
However if you take The General on BD - it looks gorgeous and I hope they'll release more oldies in high resolution.

???
Why would it be a waste of money to have a beautiful silent movie on Blu-ray? You can chose from a pristine foreign print or the original which has lesser detail.
All in all it comes more close to how you would see this film in a movie theatre than ever.

The original film it was shot on has a higher resolution than blu-ray does and certainly higher than a DVD. Then why wouldn't it make sense to put it out on BD to get a better picture and audio?

DVDbeaver claims that this is not region-locked, but it will not play on my LG BD300 region A machine. So much for the single most expensive Blu-ray disc I have purchased to date. Has anyone else bought this and had a more pleasant experience ?

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

The Blu-ray is region free. Did you install the latest firmware on your BD player?

Actually, Sunrise is usually available at a sensible price, e.g. 24$ with free shipping worldwide directly at Eureka:

That is about the same price I paid for it from Amazon.com.uk...but it ramainds the most expensiev single blu-ray I have bought.

I did not install the latest firmware because it has been described as "toxic" by multiple people and I feared it would wreak some unwanted havoc as it did to other machines. Apparently all it does is allow youtube downloads which I have no intention of requiring. But the harm it did is described as stopping DVDs from playing, which has happened to me anyway.

The Blu-ray version of SUNRISE plays just fine on both of my Panasonic players and on my brothers Panasonic and Sony Blu-ray machines. So the problem isn't with the discs. Try the firmware update for your machine. If you still have trouble take your SUNRISE disc to a local dealer and try playing it on a store machine.
