George O'Brien's hair and scene filming chronology
When I was watching Sunrise again last night, I took note of the fact that George O'Brien's hair is at different lengths through various scenes in the film. Given that the whole film takes place over a day or two, his hair could not grow that much in that short period of time! This info does give clues as to what scenes may have been shot at the same time even though they are not in the same chronological order in the film itself. Here are my observations :
Scene Description George's Hair Length
Opening scene in kitchen - short
In the swamp - short
Plowing - long
On the boat trip to the city - short
When he's going to kill Janet - long
On the tram - short
Crossing the street chasing Janet - long
In the cafe - long
Church scene - short
Crossing the street kissing - long
Barber shop - VERY Long
Photo studio - VERY long
In the arcade with the piggy - long
Peasant dance - long
In the sailboat home - long
When the accordian barge goes by - very short
Janet sleeping on George's lap in the boat - Long
During the shipwreck - long
Searching for Janet - long
Running in the house when Janet presumed dead - short
Praying on Janet's bed - short
Strangling Margaret - short
Final scene - short
To me the most obvious difference in George's hair is on the sailboat ride on the way home. His hair is really long but when the barge goes by playing music and he is flirting with Janet in the boat, it's very short, and then when the wind picks up, it's long again!
I am hoping that Ziggy or DDoherty can help identify which scenes may have been filmed where and when from this info.
