George O'Brien's hair and scene filming chronology

When I was watching Sunrise again last night, I took note of the fact that George O'Brien's hair is at different lengths through various scenes in the film. Given that the whole film takes place over a day or two, his hair could not grow that much in that short period of time! This info does give clues as to what scenes may have been shot at the same time even though they are not in the same chronological order in the film itself. Here are my observations :
Scene Description George's Hair Length
Opening scene in kitchen - short
In the swamp - short
Plowing - long
On the boat trip to the city - short
When he's going to kill Janet - long
On the tram - short
Crossing the street chasing Janet - long
In the cafe - long
Church scene - short
Crossing the street kissing - long
Barber shop - VERY Long
Photo studio - VERY long
In the arcade with the piggy - long
Peasant dance - long
In the sailboat home - long
When the accordian barge goes by - very short
Janet sleeping on George's lap in the boat - Long
During the shipwreck - long
Searching for Janet - long
Running in the house when Janet presumed dead - short
Praying on Janet's bed - short
Strangling Margaret - short
Final scene - short

To me the most obvious difference in George's hair is on the sailboat ride on the way home. His hair is really long but when the barge goes by playing music and he is flirting with Janet in the boat, it's very short, and then when the wind picks up, it's long again!
I am hoping that Ziggy or DDoherty can help identify which scenes may have been filmed where and when from this info.

What a lovely way to spend a winter's day - contemplating George O'Brien's hair!

I think that your in-depth research , shows that what I have always heard is true. The Lake Arrowhead scenes were shot first and the city scenes came later. The scenes on the boat were obviously filmed in different ways. Some must have been shot on Lake Arrowhead itself (as George remembered) and others were probably shot in the tank - where the filmmakers could create a storm - to whip his lovely dark locks around!

There were a number of articles at the time mentioning how shaggy George was looking - some of his friends didn't recognize him one day when he was walking home (his car wouldn't start) - he waved to them, but they didn't know who that shaggy peasant was!

Right after filming this movie, he had to have his hair cut very very short to play the boxer Chick Cowan in Is Zat So - but then let it grow again for East Side West Side

I will try to look for the two boat scenes where the hair length difference is really apparent.

I noticed all that too but I never wanted to say anything. Of course, I just noticed it being long or short. Not really longer, shortest etc.

Good eye!

Here are some of the photos I am talking about in the storm scene, George's hair and the likely filming sequences :
1. Janet and George just leaving on the sailboat- LONG HAIR. Might as has been said, been filmed back at the studio in the tank later on after the Lake Arrowhead work was complete

2. When the barge goes by and they are flirting to the music - SHORT HAIR
Looks like this one was actually filmed on the lake because we see the barge in the background. Can't do that in a tank in the studio.

3. When the storm kicks up, George has LONG HAIR. Consistent with this piece of filming being done later back at the studio in the tank, like the sailing scene above.

Of course, Janet is wearing an awful wig in the words of John Bailey who provides commentary on one version of the DVD of Sunrise, and so hers does not change in appearance at all.
ENJOY!
