Type of housing?

I tend to look at the movie sets a lot, and I was just wondering...does anyone know what type of housing that was that the seductress was living in?

In the scene where one of the townsman is rushing to help hunt for the drowning wife, he runs past the seductresses window, but her windows weren't on the outside of the buidling, they faced into a hall. I've never seen anything like that before. Was that some kind of apartment building?
Do they have apartments like that in Europe? I'm just curious about it.
Thanks

I will of course defer to my friends who have more expertise on this and the story than I (Ziggy and DDOherty where are you ??) but I believe the story takes place in a little fishing / farming village where the cottages are close together and people rented out rooms for the summer. The Woman from the City is staying with an older couple in their cottage as a vacationer - recall how she interrupts the woman and has her polish the patent leather pumps before she heads out to do her seducing. I would imagine the residents of the village earned a little extra money by renting out rooms and providing meals to vacationers like the Woman from the City.
I live near Cape Cod in Massachusetts and people still do this sort of thing. It's a resort area and people rent out rooms, suites or provide room and board to young people working there for the summer.
I hope this helps.
