The Amazing Janet Gaynor

I think Janet Gaynor is just amazing as the wife in this film (with full respect for George O'Brien's excellent job). No wonder she got the Oscar for best actress in a Leading Role.

Anyone else agree.

Yes, I agree Gaynor's performance is fantastic. I think of the early scene with the dog in particular. It's amazing how much communication (with the audience) there is in that scene.

The scene with the dog seems very authentic - the dog seemed very connected with Janet Gaynor. Her performance in "Sunrise" is probably one of the best performances ever that won a Best Actor/Actress award. She seems so incredibly fragile, yet resilient. George O'Brien is also great in this film - he seems to have pushed himself to the edge of this emotional abyss and stopped just short of going over the edge.

Janet Gaynor is one of the very best silent movie actresses - I'd put her right on side of Pickford and Gish. I actually think her STREET ANGEL performance is her best silent work though.

Gaynor is great, but, of the performances in the film, she tends to get all the attention if not the credit. George O'Brien (in my heretical opinion) is actually better, especially given the burden placed on his character and the necessity of getting us to believe both his transformation and his moral reformation.
