I just had a thought about a story aspect of this movie.

So in the original novel, Frankenstein doesn't have an assistant and unlike this movie, he is horrified of the monster right after bringing it to life. This leads to him yelling in horror at the Monster to go away. I sort of think when writing the play this is adapted from, the writer didn't like that Frankenstein was horrified of his creation and decided to abandon it. But he or she decided to create an assistant of Frankenstein to make him be the one that's scared of the monster. And also wrote Frankenstein himself as wanting to teach the monster things and is unable to because of the terrified assistant. Kind of a unique thing to decide in adaptation. I like it.

You’re probably right that it was a conscious decision on the part of the filmmakers.
