BTW, while that was in fact made by Jackson, that's not to say that he totally made all that stuff up himself. Instead he closely followed like story-boards, script-notes, etc., AFAIK having gathered all existing and available information quite comprehensively regarding the scene as drawn-out the makers of the original 1933 film and then made that as it is seen.

What we see when watching the scene seems more or less what the original scene might have been like in about every detail, even down to the '30s technology VFX and B&W film.

And yes, he did all of that for many reasons, but mostly, according to him, for the fun of doing it.
