One of the greatest jokes in film history

The flag falling off the truck and turning the tramp into the leader of a communist march. Anybody else agree?

reply

That's a great gag, and I love the way the music swells when the marchers fall in behind Charlie. It's also something of an inside joke, but viewers who know nothing about the political controversies of Chaplin's life can still enjoy this scene.

I saw Modern Times at a public screening a couple of years ago, and this sequence got one of the biggest laughs of the entire film.

reply

I certainly agree.

Uncle Bill, I don't want to go to Terre Haute!

reply

I agree. It's a great joke in both the movie and in real life, due to the US's whole "you can't come here because we think you're Communist" thing, which was dumb.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. And even if I'm right, it doesn't make your reply not relevant.

But doesn't the "you can't come here because we think you're Communist" thing, began after World War II? So, a decade or so after this movie?

reply

I actually thought the feeding machine at the plant was the funniest thing I've seen in a Chaplin movie. Just thinking about it now makes me laugh. His face each time the mouth wiper comes by!! Classic.

"Don't tease me about my hobbies. I don't tease you about being an a**hole."

reply

The feeding machine is definitely my favorite! The first time I saw it I laughed so hard I ended up in tears...

Yes! It's one of my absolute favourite funny scenes in a movie EVER!
(Your God, I start to sound like Comic Book Guy, and thats bad)
Along with the Stoning scene from Life of Brian, Gruocho fast-talk in Duck Soup, The Moose joke in the beginning of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and when Ace does his crazy stuff behind the chiefs back in Ace Ventura 2 it is the best comedy scene ever. I've never laughed so hard as when I saw those scenes. I almost died because I couldn't breath. And thats true comedy.
