One of the great dramas of the 1930's

TMC says this was released as a low budget "B movie". As it travelled the country with great word of mouth, it became the "A movie" of the double bill. I can't remember any other movie that made me cry. The ending of this movie does, even after viewing it several times. Great character development, well written, well directed. Starring the under appreciated Chester Morris. Even a great performance by the child actor.

It is interesting watching an early B film such as this knowing the influence it may have carried on producers of later disaster/survival films, even reality TV programs of today.🐭

Yes, it was a well developed plot in which the characters we are introduced to change into something closer to their real selves as they are confronted with their harsh new conditions.

Some of them rise to the occasion and redeem themselves; others show their true colors as selfish cowards.

I was surprised at how good and how satisfactory the ending was.

I just saw the film and really enjoyed it. I found it very suspenseful, especially when you could hear those damn drums in the background, only to hear them abruptly stop. We all know what that meant! And seeing the cannibals' feet only freaked me out!!

I saw this for the first time several months ago and loved it. I think the intelligent screenplay helped elevate the "B" status of the film. A few weeks ago I saw the remake, "Back From Eternity", also directed by John Farrow. It wasn't a bad movie by any means, but was certainly not an improvement on the original.
