How come the Munchkin riflemen didn't shoot the witch?

The munchkins had an army of sorts. They were armed with rifles, yet none of them took a shot at the witch to put her out of her misery.

I know it's a stupid question, but it's bothered me ever since I first saw this movie as a kid.

Maybe they were for show, and not real rifles. If they had been enslaved by the Wicked Witch of the East, I can't imagine that she would have let them have real guns or anything that they could use against her.

reply

Or maybe bullets wouldn't hurt her, just water.

Too bad they didn't have squirt guns!

I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.

LOL, the image I now have in my head is too funny! 

Yeah, you know, I did think of the whole "parade rifles" and "only water" could hurt her. But some young brave munchkin trooper should have at least tried ... once, even if she was somehow immune to "bullets" or something.

Ever since I first saw this film as a young boy my first thought was "Hey, they have soldiers. Take her out!"

Just me 

Actually the Munchkins were oppressed by the Wicked Witch of the East, but I don't know if they were literally enslaved by her.

In some Islamic countries, Mamluks or foreign slaves were a main part of the army, armed with spears, swords, bows, and guns in later centuries.

Many Muslim rulers had households composed of their slaves. Their wives, mothers, concubines and servant women were their slaves. The eunuchs, former men, who worked in and guarded the the harems of the Muslim rulers were the slaves of the rulers. Thus the Muslim rulers lived their private lives in places where the only armed persons were their slaves.

LOL, jad! I love those!

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

They were a little "short" on ammo.

If the guns weren't real, or they didn't have ammunition, they could have been ready with some concealed buckets of water to drench her with the next time she showed up. Or, maybe her vulnerability to water wasn't known until the incident with Dorothy that took her out.

To them she was like a god. An evil god to be sure but they were still terrified of her. Perhaps they thought she would not be harmed.

The other way to think about it could: If you took that shot and missed, what would her reaction be and how many would she take it out on. She might take it out on your family and friends... and your little dog too.
