Men With Zippers

I've lost count how many times I've seen this movie, and each time every word of every line sounds familiar and new at the same time. Yet only tonight did I ever notice this delightful little throwaway:

Customer: Have you any traveling bags for men, with a zipper?
Matuschek: Oh yes, madam. We have all types of traveling bags for men with zippers.

It's so light & Lubitsch (or Laszlo or Raphaelson or Morgan) that I apparently missed it until now. This time I laughed myself silly!

So did I just a few minutes ago. My instant thought is of me standing there as a clerk saying to the woman, " Be sure when he comes to the shop that be brings his zipper."

I suppose that would not please Mr. Matuschek.

Reminds me of a similar line from Mary Poppins:

"There was a man with a wooden leg named Smith."
"What was the name of his other leg?"

I've only seen this movie 3 times, and have yet to pick up on all the fantastically funny dialogue. This is quickly becoming my favorite Christmas flick. I'm ordering it today as a Christmas present for myself. My current favorite Christmas movie is "Christmas in Connecticut" with Barbara Stanwyck (who, IMO, is the best film actress ever)

I love Barbara Stanwyck, too! She was so fantastic in:

Baby Face
Sorry, Wrong Number
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
Double Indemnity
Ball of Fire

and some other movies.

I don't think I've seen Christmas in Connecticut.

LOVE her in Baby Face! Christmas in Connecticut is a fun bit of Christmas cheer with a great cast of character actors. Barbara is delightful in it. "Stella Dallas" is a must if you haven't seen it. I haven't seen Ball of Fire or Martha Ivers...but I will. Thanks for giving me some suggestions. Oh, another fav of mine is "The Mad Miss Manton", not just for the chemistry between Stanwyck and Fonda, but also for the wardrobe of all the ladies.

Oh yes, I knew that I was forgetting to mention a film! The Mad Miss Manton...excellent mystery! I love 1930s whodunnits. This one is right up my alley.
