I love this movie as well. It's one of my favorites. William Tracy, who plays Pepi, cracks me up in this one. Margaret Sullivan and James Stewart play off each other wonderfully. The ending is also great. I'm glad the rating is so high. Maybe it will be in the top 250 in the future.
"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today."
absolutely fantastic. I find Pepi really funny. The Sullivan/Stewart tandem really pulled it off quite impressively! The ending was so romantic. :)

Me too! So well acted, well directed, funny and touching. Not too sweet at all, rather very ahead of its time in style. Lubitsch knew exactly what he was doing.
shareAnother version of this story is In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland, or so my mother says. I have not seen it yet, but can't wait.
That is correct, with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. This, the original, works far better than the two remakes. It's a charming film about average people and their lives, gentle, tender, funny, well acted and well written. Been one of my favorites for a long time and I always watch it when it's on TCM if I can.
shareIn The Good Old Summertime, Van Johnson was very good (of course, not a Jimmy Stewart), but to me Judy Garland always looked a little bit "not well". Rather gaunt and overdone. But she did have a great voice. I loved S.Z. Sakal as the store owner and Spring Byington as the one who cares about him. Buster Keaton was also in this one. The story is almost exactly the same but of course there is more music in it. (At the end, when the main characters are walking through the park with their little girl, the little girl is Liza Minelli) I noticed there are 3 movies with this title but it is the 1949 version.

Truely, fantastic movie. I saw it long back on TCM and am still trying to get a copy of it as my cable provider has stopped beaming TCM.
shareI think this movie is wonderful. There are only a few movies i can watch, rewind, watch, rewind, etc. and this is one of them! I love Jimmy, who couldn't, just the face and the voice and his whole....way...i dunno! But, i'm not quite as big a fan of Sullivan, somethin about the pouty lip thing she has goin the whole time. But i luv this movie...its a good one
shareThis was the first James Stewart movie that I'd ever seen and it sprung my obsession with him. I finally bought it on amazon.ca last week and am eagerly anticipating it in the mail!
shareI Just bought this DVD in Japan and it cost $5, which I thought was really cheap. There are no extras on it and everything is original, including the crackly soundtrack, but never mind, the movie magic transports you away from any flaws and into pre-war Budapest and among those wonderful characters. Absolutely love it.
shareCharming movie, vastly better than "You've Got Mail." It has become a pre-Christmas tradition to watch this in our home, along with "It's a Wonderful Life," another classic with James Stewart.
I admittedly have a soft spot in my heart for these romantic stories...anytime I hear 'Ochi Tchornya', this film immediately comes to mind, and I now have a fondness for this tune. (Wish our neighborhood had a shop like Matuschek's-maybe I'd buy a music box, too!).
It's one of my favorites as well. Jimmy and Margaret have such sweet chemistry.
shareIts such a great movie. I just saw it and all I can say is it is well written, well directed and well acted movie.
shareSublime movie. It's so beautiful I cried twice...and it's a comedy!
